Superfood for Holistic Health

What’s a superfood? Good question. The term has been floating around as the latest and greatest catchphrase in nutrition circles for quite few years now. But what exactly is a superfood and how are they so great for the body? Put simply, a superfood is one that is jam packed with antioxidants, vitamins and minerals that can help the body ward off disease such as cancer and can help turn back the clock when it comes to aging. There are a lot of superfoods out there, but here’s a shortlist of the 10 best in our opinion.

Green Tea. While technically not a food per se, as it’s drunk, green tea really does pack a heck of a punch when it comes to superfoods. It contains poly phenols which studies show may reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer and stroke. It also supports brain health and memory, in part die to a compound found in the plant called EGCG (or, epigallocatechin gallate) which is a flavinoid. EGCG is thought to boost the immune system and prevent tumors.

Wild Omega-3 Rich Fish. Those fish that are caught in the wild and are rich in the beneficial Omega-3 fat, are thought to protect against heart disease and other inflammatory diseases. Be careful how much you consume and which species due to increased risk of mercury exposure. Fish is currently recommended to be consumed no more than a couple of times a week.

Pomegranates and Blueberries. The wonder fruits! Both are packed with high antioxidants and help with brain and memory protection. Studies also show that drinking pomegranate juice can aid in the fight against hardening of the arteries or athersclerosis.

Olive Oil. It’s no wonder there’s so little heart attacks reported in the Mediterranean with olive oil playing a prominent role in the diet. The oil helps protect against both heart disease and cancer.

Nuts-Walnuts, Almonds, Pine Nuts, Macadamias. These nuts can help protect against heart disease and inflammatory issues in the body. It’s also been proven that they can help lower cholesterol.

Whole Grains-Oats, Whole Wheat, Barley. Whole grains help stabilize blood sugar, insulin and may also help protect against heart disease.

Red Grapes (also red and white wine.) Vitamin C, B1 and B6 are all present in red grapes that may help decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease. Another unique compound found in red grapes is resveratrol, which has antioxidant, anticancer and anti inflammatory properties.

Onion and Garlic. Both of these vegetables contain sulfur compounds that may protect against heart disease and some cancers.

Crucifers (Broccoli, Kale, Cabbage) These cruciferous vegetables contain indole alkaloids that may help prevent cancer.

Tomatoes. The round red veggie contains lycopene which has been shown to stimulate the immune system and protect against some cancers such as prostate.

For those with a sweet tooth, dark chocolate also makes the list. Chock full of flavonols, dark chocolate is a powerful antioxidant loaded treat. Enjoy with a glass of red wine, no need to feel guilty!
